Susan Foote, MN, PMHNP-BC
Background: I graduated from University of Washington School of Nursing earning a Master of Nursing degree and am Board Certified as a Nurse practitioner specializing in child and adolescent psychiatry, including substance use disorders. My dissertation was on how poverty and lack of financial opportunity affects development across the life span and contributes to mental health duress. During earlier years, I graduated from University of Southern California Dental School earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene and practiced for 7 years in pediatric and adult dentistry. I value this rich education experience in understanding genetics and human morphologic variables with reference to detection and diagnosis of co-occurring developmental challenges from fetal stage and throughout the life span.
Approach: My practice philosophy is to value the collaborative relationship with the individual and family, to identify specific concerns which helps focus treatment, define improvement and maximizes treatment success. I am experienced in assessing suspected co-occurring medical, developmental, mental health and substance use conditions. I do this by including assessment and education of the individual's neurologic and biological/genetic development, and/or what environment factors may contribute to the current mental health issues. In this way the client and family become better informed in the difference diagnosis. Thereafter, we will discuss evidence-based treatment choices that are appropriate including options for therapy and psychotropic medications (if needed).
Interests: My personal interests are enjoying nature in the Pacific Northwest by camping, hiking, fishing and avid gardening. I continue to enjoy preceptorship of Psychiatry Nurse Practitioner students for their clinical placement experiences. Practicing the role of preceptor /instructor assists me in seeking up to date and effective evidence-based treatment modalities. I had the honor to receive distinguished recognition as Preceptor of the Year 2017 from University of Washington School of Nursing-within the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Pathway.
