Kayla Szykowny, MS, LMHC
Hello and welcome! I’m glad you’re here. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) with a Masters of Science degree in Mental Health Counseling from the University at Albany in NY and a Bachelors of Arts degree from the University of Buffalo, also in NY.
My counseling career began in 2013 in Orange County, NY when I was a Senior Residence Counselor at Rehabilitation Support Services, Inc. From there, I moved back to my hometown of Buffalo, NY working as a Mental Health Counselor for Spectrum Human Services. After 2 years, I accepted a position as a Senior Counselor at Horizon Health Services in Buffalo. An opportunity arose a couple years later, and I accepted a job I’ve always wanted in inpatient psychiatry at Erie County Medical Center, a Level 1 trauma center in Buffalo. Although I was thrilled with my position, life got exciting very quickly - my boyfriend enrolled in school pursuing his dream of becoming a commercial diver, and so we found ourselves on a new adventure here in Seattle! I miss my Sahlen’s hot dogs, beef on weck, and sponge candy, but nothing beats the stunning views and lovely people around this city.
I take an integrative and person-centered approach, drawing from different counseling philosophies, in order to meet the unique needs of each individual I work with. Collaborating with me, you will find a non-judgmental and empathic stance. Everyone has been through something and communicating and working through those things can be very difficult and uncomfortable. For me, ensuring that there is a healthy counselor-client relationship is one of the most beneficial pieces of treatment - it is a foundation on which change can be facilitated more comfortably and successfully. Emotions, thoughts, and behaviors are very much intertwined, so I tend to focus on those unpleasant and unhelpful thought processes that may be impacting your emotions and behaviors. In addition, I use a mindfulness-based approach allowing you to be present and gain clarity, while simultaneously reducing unpleasant thoughts and emotions within. Your thoughts matter, your emotions are valid, and you are doing your best to live your best life. I look forward very much to supporting you on your path!
