Jennifer Trefonas, MS, LMHC, MHP
I believe that we all bring many strengths into the world and are constantly growing into the best version of ourselves. I enjoy helping others to remove the obstacles in their lives so that their goals are within reach.I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the State of Washington. I was originally licensed in the State of Florida. I received my Masters of Science degree at the University of Central Florida. I have 30 years of experience with counseling adults, couples, families, and children in a variety of settings.
I was raised in a large family that valued education and democracy. I grew up in a large city and have now lived in 5 different states. I learned the skills of communication, empathy, and compromise as a result. I also became aware of and learned to value and appreciate multi-cultural differences.
MY APPROACH TO COUNSELING
My approach to counseling is to use whatever counseling/ therapy methods work the best for each person. My methods are an eclectic mix of many different counseling styles: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Solution-focused therapy, Mindfulness, Narrative Therapy, Art Therapy, Animal-Assisted Therapy, and Role-playing. I enjoy collaborating with people to identify both their strengths and weaknesses, coping skills, or other challenges that each individual is seeking for supportive help for growth and change.
MY EDUCATION AND TRAINING
I finished my first Bachelor of Arts in History in 1983 from the University of Florida. I then finished both another Bachelor of Arts in Psychology (1985) and then was accepted into the graduate program for Clinical Psychology at the University of Central Florida (UCF) in Orlando, Florida. My graduate program concentrated on gaining both counseling and testing skills. I interned for two semesters at Orlando Regional Medical Center. I then finished my master’s thesis on Ameliorating Nightmares Using Progressive Relaxation Therapy. I graduated in 1987 with a Master of Science degree in Clinical Psychology.
