Heather Thomson, MSSW, LICSW
Welcome; I’m Heather.
I’m a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) and therapist. I provide therapy to individuals ages 18+ and couples. My interests include working with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, panic attacks, addiction, relationship issues, life transitions and grief and loss. I am especially passionate about helping clients work through anxiety, perfectionism and shame.
Education & Experience
I have a Master’s degree in Clinical Social Work from the University of Texas at Austin. I received my BA in Foreign Languages (Spanish) and International Affairs from The University of Puget Sound. Prior to opening my private practice, I worked in a variety of settings including community mental health, inpatient hospice, behavioral health integration in primary care clinics and at a state psychiatric hospital.
My approach to psychotherapy is rooted in systems therapy, which is based on the belief that an individual cannot be understood alone but rather in conjunction with their environment. Building on this framework, I think it’s vital to use evidence-based-practices (EBPs) in my work with clients. Using EBPs means that the therapeutic techniques have been shown to be effective. I utilize cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), motivational interviewing (MI) and mindfulness techniques. I tailor my counseling approach to fit your specific needs in therapy.
I’m continuously striving to expand my knowledge and competency of EBPs through training and peer consultation. I have had training in CBT, ACT, dementia, and the neuroscience of anxiety and panic. I’ve received in depth training in DBT, completing a 60+ hour course while I worked at the University of Washington Medical Center. I’ve also completed Gottman Method Couples Therapy Training (Levels 1 and 2), with the goal of becoming a certified Gottman Couples therapist in the future.
I’m a real human too. When I am not working, you can find me reading a book, enjoying nature, trying my hand at making something delicious in the kitchen, playing with my coonhound or watching the newest superhero movie.
