Connie Guy, MS, LMHC
I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) and Chemical Dependency Professional Trainee (CDPT), with additional credentials as a Child Mental Health Specialist. I have a Master of Science degree in Mental Health Counseling from Capella University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Calvin College.
For over twenty years, I’ve worked with children, adolescents, adults and families struggling with mental health issues, chemical dependency and relationship difficulties. Prior to joining a group therapy practice, I worked in community mental health agencies for several years, in a medical clinic and in a co-occurring disorders clinic as well as a subcontractor for the military providing case management for Naval reservists and active duty staff at the Everett Naval Base. I have also worked as a social worker for the State of Washington and in residential treatment facilities with adolescent girls who were either at risk or were incarcerated.
I believe in each person’s potential for change and progress toward their own personal goals. I am passionate and dedicated to assisting clients in removing their own barriers and moving toward their own best selves. A large part of my practice includes teaching mindfulness and acceptance practices so that each person has a starting point for their journey forward.
My thinking is influenced by cognitive theory, attachment and existentialism and I weave these together so that the client and I can understand the journey thus far and how to develop a roadmap going forward. I utilize a variety of techniques including motivational interviewing, cognitive behavior techniques and mindfulness-based stress reduction. I was also trained in dialectical behavior therapy through my work with incarcerated adolescents and find it to be highly effective in working with individuals struggling with anxiety, depression and self-harm.
