Jonathan Monroe, MS, LMHC
Welcome! My name is Jonathan Monroe and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with a master’s degree in K-12 School Counseling from Eastern Illinois University. I also have my Educational Staff Associate Certification (ESA), and have experienced working as a mental health counselor within the public school system, and continue to receive professional education and training in both psychotherapy and school counseling theories and practices. I recently relocated to the Seattle area in January 2017. I lived in the Midwest for most of my life and desired to live in a place that offered an opportunity to spend time with family and friends, taking in the mountains views, enjoying music venues, eating great food, exploring new nature experiences, and being involved in ongoing social connections with a diverse culture of people living in this beautiful Pacific Northwest Region.
As a therapist, I utilize an eclectic approach, meaning the work is informed by my training in various modalities of psychotherapy and tailored to the individual.
I’m well established in evidence-based practices such as; Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Dialectical-Behavioral Therapy, Trauma Focused CBT, Play Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Existential and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy. I’ll be walking right alongside you, encouraging, respecting and challenging you to be your true self. I can tailor my approach to best fit your needs and help you achieve your specific goals. I have a down-to-earth personality and use humor as a healthy coping skill for myself when things become stressful.
With over 20 years in the mental health field, my experiences include; providing outpatient counseling for children, adolescents, adults, couples and families with mental health disorders, emotional and behavioral issues. My previous work environments has been involved in settings including in-home, residential facilities, community mental health agencies and school-based environments. I’m very thankful for the opportunity to be a therapist who is committed to helping you understand the challenges and possibilities for real change within your life, while also guiding you through the uncertainties that affect your personal, social, and professional lives.
A variety of my work experiences include; providing outpatient counseling for children, adolescents, adults, couples and families with mental health disorders, emotional and behavioral issues. My approach as a therapist is holistic and collaborative. I will help you to clarify your goals for therapy, and then utilize my role as a therapist to facilitate your journey toward increased wellness as you create a future of your choosing.
I believe that sustainable change comes from an exploration in the fractures of the human experience.
Have you ever felt that you weren’t being your true self? Feeling lost and/or in despair? Maybe you have a lot of stressors going on in your life right now that is just becoming more difficult to manage. Are you going through a major life transition that is becoming more difficult to adjust to and move on? For some, seeking help from a mental health therapist can feel overwhelming, even intimidating. Finding an understanding therapist who is best suited to your needs, however, is often the first step towards a happier and more meaningful life.
Right now you might be looking for guidance, support and direction that can help you get to where you wan to go. I believe it is important that my clients feel comfortable, safe and confident in our work together. I work with adults, adolescents, and children from a place of respect and compassion and believe that real life transformation happens when we place true value on our true experiences and the perspective lens in which we see and understand ourselves, and the world. We will work together to help you gain a greater sense of self and there by close the gap between how your life is and how you want it to be. Being able to help individuals generate new ideas and gain personal insight can help them to explore parts of themselves they are not aware of that can lead to positive and healthy emotional and interpersonal functioning.
Addressing the barriers to becoming your authentic self is necessary to establishing and sustaining a healthy relationship with yourself. Through specific techniques, talk therapy and structured goals we can work together to overcome hardships to live a happy and successful life. The personal journey and adventures we encounter throughout our lives will inescapably bring about challenging experiences, especially when we feel alone and disconnected to our inner selves.
As I continue to allow my own self to grow and change I find myself making it through the challenges of life feeling more empowered and hopeful, and I desire the same for those I provide counseling to. I thrive on the unique presentations of individuals and enjoy the challenge of understanding and connecting with each client with whom I work with.
If you’re curious about engaging in counseling, feel free to contact me and I can discuss the process further.
