Emily Ellison, MS, MHP, CDPT, LMHC
My name is Emily Ellison and I am a Washington State Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) and a Chemical Dependency Professional Trainee (CDPT) at Mindful Therapy Group in Mountlake Terrace. I graduated from Western Washington University with a bachelor’s degree in Human Services. I then received my master’s degree from Capella University in Mental Health Counseling. I worked at community mental health agency as a clinician for over 5 years. In 2017 I went back to school at Spokane Falls Community College to take all of the courses required in order to receive the chemical dependency certification. I currently hold a CDPT as all I have left are some internship hours prior to applying for my full CDP.
I have a somewhat eclectic theoretical style that I practice with clients in session. First and foremost I use a Person-Centered style of counseling. This means that I let the client take the lead in counseling and work really hard to build the best therapeutic relationship possible. I also have extensive experience in working with Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) both in individual sessions and as a group facilitator. In addition, I use other techniques such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), talk therapy, art therapy, psychoeducation, and utilizing workbooks for various disorders.
Since I have worked in community health for several years I have experience working with adults with most of the disorders recognized in the DSM-5 including but not limited to: mood disorders, personality disorders, schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD/complex trauma, eating disorders, LGBT/gender Dysphoria, and substance use disorders among others. I will be taking clients that are 16 years or older. I have additional experience in working with life stressors, adjustment disorders, identity issues, cultural sensitive topics, grief/loss, family issues, and interpersonal relationships.
My goal in working with clients is to help them work through their problems, stabilize their moods, learn new coping skills, become more knowledgeable about their mental health and diagnoses, and provide support throughout the therapeutic process.
Outside of the office I truly enjoy spending quality time with my family. I am voracious reader of many genres and I enjoy discussing books and literature. Working out is a great stress reliever for me and I try to get to the gym at least 3 to 4 times a week. I am known to be friendly and a generally laid back kind of person. I hope to make the therapy process as comfortable for clients as possible.
