Meditation Services in Seattle, WA - Healing the Mind and Body

There are many different forms of meditation. Various cultures practice mindfulness in their own unique way, but each type of meditation has its perks. From stillness of the mind to focusing our body's energy, meditation comes in many different forms. Some of the most popular forms that are offered in the Seattle area include Yoga and Reiki, but that's not the only type of meditation you can find. We'll go into more detail about them below:

Yoga

Yoga has both physical and mental benefits. Seattle has an enormous community of yoga enthusiasts  so these benefits are not falling on deaf ears. It focuses on the mind and body and is a great approach to healing without the use of drugs. “The purpose of yoga is to create strength, awareness, and harmony in both the mind and body,” explains Natalie Nevins, DO, a board-certified osteopathic family physician and certified Kundalini Yoga instructor in Hollywood, California. There are so many different types of Yoga, over 100 to be exact so there is probably going to be a type of Yoga that anyone will enjoy.

Physical Benefits

While Yoga doesn't look like the most strenuous form of exercise, it can be surprisingly difficult and has many physical benefits for our bodies. Some of the physical benefits of Yoga include:

  • flexibility
  • protection from injury
  • stable metabolism
  • increased energy

These are some of the big ones, but it also helps with weight loss and cardio. Yoga provides a great alternative to lifting weights or running, but it is more effective when done on top of other physical activities such as biking and playing sports. In general, the more active our bodies are, the happier and healthier they will be.

Mental Benefits

The mental benefits of Yoga are the most sought out ones. After just one session, people find that they feel energized and rejuvenated, both physically and mentally. Because of the powerful mental healing that Yoga can have, many addiction treatment centers use it as part of their recovery programs. We here at Mindful Therapy encourage meditative acts like Yoga as part of a routine to improve your mental health. It acts as a meditation service to heal the mind from the negative effects of drugs.

Not only does it relieve stress, but it is also a good way to relax and let the mind be at peace. Stress is a big cause of drug use, mental illnesses such as depression, physical pain, and poor sleeping habits. Yoga helps relieve some of the stress of daily life and gives people the opportunity to relax, meditate, and increase concentration. Because of all of these benefits, Yoga is a great way to start off the day and so many people find that they don't want to live without it!

Reiki

Reiki is often less heard of than Yoga, but there are still many benefits that come with this type of meditation. Even though it is lesser known, the Seattle community has not been immune to it's effects. Reiki is a form of alternative energy healing that was started in Japan in the 1800's. This form of healing transfers universal energy from the practitioner to the patient.

Although this is a method of healing that is hard to prove, many people say that it has had a positive effect on their lives. Reiki is becoming more popular by the year, especially in the USA and it continues to grow in the Seattle area. Whether you are strutting down California Way or making your way around Miller Park, you are probably going to run into a practice.

What exactly happens in a Reiki session? Reiki is set up similarly to a massage in that there is a table that people lay on. It needs to be in a peaceful setting, but it can be done anywhere. Music is typically used, but it all depends on the patient's preferences. Not all patients choose to use music as a part of this meditation and still see the same results.

The practitioner places their hands lightly on or over specific areas of the head, limbs, and torso using different hand shapes. Typically, these positions are held between 2 and 5 minutes. During one session, the hands can be placed over 20 different areas of the body depending on the patient's needs.

If there is a wound, the practitioner will put their hands above the wound and will begin the energy transfer process. Some practitioners may use crystals as an alternative to hands when they sense an abundance of negative energy flowing through the patient's body.

Some health benefits of Reiki include;

  • cancer treatment
  • depression treatment
  • chronic pain treatment
  • heart disease treatment
  • anxiety treatment
  • autism treatment

Like Yoga, Reiki is done in a room where the patient is fully relaxed. It needs to be peaceful to provide a successful outcome. Reiki is a great alternative healing process that does not use drugs. Many times addiction treatments will include Yoga or Reiki as an alternative healing process and may use it with the medication to get the full effect without having the patient get addicted to the drugs.

Mindfulness Meditation

Yoga and Reiki both have some great benefits. Fortunately, Seattle is big enough that there are plenty of places to choose from to do either meditation. Yoga is already very popular amongst Americans and positively affects both the mind and body. Reiki is an up and coming meditation style that is shown to be effective with healing wounds and mental illnesses as well. If you are looking for an alternative way of healing without drugs, then these two forms of healing are definitely for you.

But sometimes, it can be hard to fit Yoga or Reiki sessions into our hectic schedules so how can we practice meditation? If classes are too much of a time commitment, meditation practices can be accomplished at home or even on the go through mindfulness meditation. How or where you practice this is completely up to you, but essentially, you find a comfortable, relaxing place to sit and breathe.

Whether you are taking a bus ride to your favorite grocery store or strolling along Elliott Bay, you can practice this technique anywhere!

During the session, make sure you are sitting in an upright posture and actually focus on every breath you take. Pay attention to the inhales and the exhales and feel yourself be at peace. During these mindfulness sessions, your mind will start to wander, but that is your queue to gently guide it back to your breathing. Sessions like this are great ways to clear our minds or worry and the more we practice it, the easier the sessions will become.

We hope you found at least one form of meditation that we talked about valuable and if you decide to give one a try, know that you will be on your way to a healthier mind, body, and spirit!
