Background

I hold a Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Louisiana at Monroe.  I am licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist with the Washington State Department of Health.

I have an extensive work history that includes community mental health, substance abuse for opioid use disorder, working with incarcerated youth, and providing therapy for individuals, couples, and families.

Approach

My philosophy on therapy is that there is nothing wrong with people. Your brain chemicals aren't messed up, you didn’t inherit “faulty genes,” you don’t have “negative personality traits,” and you aren’t disordered.  We are all on a rock, floating through space at 55,000 MPH. So then what is the problem? Each of us has different ways of viewing the world. It is the interaction of our different ways of viewing things that cause many of the problems one might bring to a therapist.  It is my hope that I can understand how you view the world and help you using your own language.  What I bring to the table is objectivity, education, and expertise in helping people solve problems.  You bring your expertise on yourself.  Therapy is a collaboration, not a dictatorship.

I believe therapy should be problem-focused and brief.  To that aim, I believe the problem is what you say it is.  The problem is resolved when you say it is resolved.  At the outset of therapy, I get a good idea of what your problem is and how you know when it will be solved.  I have a hard limit of 10 sessions.  This is to ensure that every minute of every session is spent on solving problems.  It promotes both of us to provide the best possible information toward reaching your goal.

I believe people and problems can change. I am utterly confident that people and problems can change.  Some problems sooner than others and sometimes the goal might have to be adjusted, but I do believe that long lasting change is possible.
