Bob Viola, MA, LMHC

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with a Masters degree in Mental Health Counseling from Argosy University, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Syracuse University. I have spent over 10 years working in the community mental health field providing counseling to adolescents, adults, and families around a variety of mental health issues and life situations which include trauma, substance abuse, domestic violence, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. I am also an Approved Supervisor for Licensure in Washington State and have over 5 years experience consulting with staff on complex clinical situations.

BACKGROUND

I have had the great opportunity to work in various fields that have allowed me to travel to different parts of the world, learn much about different cultures, and understand the need we all have to be valued, supported, and understood. As a young boy, I grew up in a family whose members endured episodes of domestic violence, alcohol related problems, and severe depression. As an adult, I experienced the pain of divorce and the resulting breakup of my family. By seeking counseling, I found I was able to recover from this difficult period with renewed strength and understanding of what was important for my own self care, for my ability to move forward, and for my ability to provide emotional support and caring to my children in the process. It really was this journey that inspired me to work in this field and to have the opportunity to help others on their journey through challenging and painful moments in their lives.

COUNSELING APPROACH

I believe first and foremost in creating a safe and respectful counseling environment with my patients that is professional, yet informal. I believe in a collaborative approach whereby we work together to help you achieve the goals you identify in session. My approach and belief when working with each of my patients is to be open-minded, non-judgmental, and genuine. I believe very strongly that our level of success in helping you meet your goals for therapy lies in our ability to establish a comfortable and trusting relationship.

I have experience and enjoy working with people from a wide range of cultures. In my work, I draw from evidence based practices including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and generally take an approach that is client centered. I occasionally may take a directive approach to treatment, especially when sharing ideas on skill building in areas such as managing emotions and interpersonal relations. Overall, however, I come from a recovery based perspective, that focuses on your strengths as the basis for change with the fundamental belief that we all have the ability to heal and recover.
