Hello. My name is Mary Nichol. Thanks for checking out my site. I know that choosing a therapist can be a difficult decision. You may not know if the therapist may understand your issues and be able to help you. I wanted to give you some information about myself to help you make the best decision possible.  My first, and foremost goal, is to provide you with excellent therapy that meets your needs. I think that the therapeutic relationship is very important. I strive to be nonjudgmental, accepting, warm, supportive, genuine, and reliable in my interactions with clients. I accept clients where they are at in their process. I respect the autonomy of clients and their right to make decisions for themselves.  I believe that therapy should be a collaborative process where the client is part of the treatment process. I also believe that clients have an innate drive to improve their emotional health. I believe that all clients have the ability to reach their full potential, whatever that looks like for the client. Sometimes that requires that clients look deeply at their issues and the origins of those issues. It may also require that clients look at their coping styles and behavior. In other words, sometimes it requires that clients change. Change is difficult. As human beings, we do not like change. Sometimes however it is necessary. The change may be in how we view ourselves, other people, or the world.  I will help you through this process, with support, guidance, and compassion.

Professional Background

I wanted to give you some information first about my professional background. I have a BA in Sociology from the University of Washington, from their Honors Program. I then worked in the social services field for the next twenty years. I have worked as an Intake Coordinator at a mental health agency and as a Resource Specialist for a child care referral agency. More recently, I have worked as a Case Manager for a day labor program and a Housing Case Manager for a housing organization. I then decided to go back to school to become a therapist. I really felt that, at this time in my life, I would really like to be a therapist. I obtained an MA in Counseling Psychology from City University of Seattle, with President’s Honors. I then worked for Sound, formerly Sound Mental Health. I provided case management and therapy to clients with a variety of issues, including family of origin issues, posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, relationship issues, career issues, life transition issues, and persistent mental illness. I assessed clients in crisis at area emergency rooms and completed intake assessments. I also ran a Journaling Group.  I decided to go into private practice because I wanted to provide more individualized care to clients. I love learning and have taken many trainings to increase my knowledge as a therapist, including EMDR training, Gottman Method Couples training, and Trauma- Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy training. I also plan to continue my learning in order to be the best possible therapist I can be.

Theoretical Orientation                                             

I also wanted to let you know a little bit about my theoretical orientation. First and foremost, I am a person centered therapist. What that means is that I strive to provide unconditional positive regard, and be empathetic and genuine with my clients. As a result, the therapeutic relationship can be healing in and of itself. I am also a cognitive behavior therapist, in the sense that I think that it is important to help clients look at how their thoughts and feelings affect their behavior, and vice versa. I am also particularly interested in a development of cognitive behavior therapy, called Schema Therapy. This approach believes that when children do not get their emotional needs met, they develop what they call Schemas, which are basically unhelpful core beliefs that no longer serve them as adults. These core beliefs get in the way of allowing them to get their needs met as adults. The goal of Schema therapy is to help clients recognize their core beliefs and then help them get their needs met in the present. I really like this approach. It really helps me understand the issues of clients at a deeper level. I am in the process of becoming an Advanced Certified Schema Therapist. As part of the certification process, I have attended two trainings in England and am now receiving ongoing supervision with a Schema Therapy supervisor.

Areas of Expertise

Finally, I wanted to let you know about my areas of expertise. I am skilled in working with adult clients with depression, anxiety, complex trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder, family of origin issues, relationship issues, life transition issues, self-esteem issues, and career issues. I have expertise in working with adult children of narcissistic parents. I also have expertise in working with clients who have a partner or spouse on the spectrum.
