Laura Chester, MA, LMHC

biography

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and a Certified Chemical Dependency Professional.  I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Washington in 1994 and a Master of Arts in Psychology with a focus in Marriage and Family Counseling from Antioch University Seattle in 1998.

therapeutic approach & background

My approach to therapy is based on my belief that we all possess the innate ability to heal, understand and embrace our life’s journey, as well as to function as productive, engaged members of society. My strength-based approach to therapy supports those that I work with by facilitating awareness and understanding of their behavior and experiences. I see their engagement in therapy contributing to their increasing ability to shine a light upon the tools they already possess and finding new ones.

I have a varied background of experience working with diverse populations, including: crisis intervention; day treatment with young children and their families; harm reduction and 12-step inpatient and outpatient substance-use treatment; counseling in both inpatient and outpatient hospital settings; and private practice.

Some of the techniques that I use include:  Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Systems Theory, and Solution-Focused Therapy.

Through skill, training and experience, I bring to the therapeutic relationship respect, trust, awareness, insight and technique together with the basic belief that knowledge is power.

In my current practice, I provide therapy for adult individuals and couples.  My primary areas of focus are:  adult adjustment and life transitions, substance abuse, depression and anxiety, emotional regulation, grief and loss, trauma, and couples counseling.

I truly love my work as a therapist and am honored by the people that choose to work with me, to bear witness to their story and offer guidance and support to them on their journey.
