therapeutic approach

I am a mental health counselor committed to working with individuals in support of overcoming difficult challenges and leading fulfilling and meaningful lives.

I have been in private practice for the last two years treating individual adults and adolescents in various developmental stages, with specific or complex presenting concerns.  I specialize in treating mood disorders, anxiety, Post-traumatic stress and trauma, relationships and interpersonal concerns, grief & loss, adjustment disorders, acute and chronic stress, self-esteem issues and substance abuse.  Techniques I use are informed by a few specific theories such as relational, attachment-based and brain-based approaches. I have found this to be fundamental for working with people in pain or in need of change.

Therapy usually begins with building a safe and supportive environment and may vary in pace in partnership between therapist and client. People can then work toward a reduction in troubling symptoms, improvement in their functioning and overall satisfaction with the direction of their lives.

The therapeutic relationship is a foundation of my work with clients. I practice from a vantage of wellness over illness with knowledge that people function with strengths and capabilities that will be valuable in your therapeutic process.  Techniques I use are informed by a few specific theories such as relational, attachment-based and brain-based approaches. I have found this to be fundamental for working with people in pain or in need of change.  I also use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, which utilizes mindfulness practice and present moment experiences to work effectively with difficult beliefs and emotions and supports the identification of core values toward greater fulfillment.

professional background

I am a Washington State Licensed Mental Health Counselor with a master’s degree and training in Counseling Psychology from Bastyr University.  I have a bachelor’s degree in Health Education from California State University.  I have been a mental health provider for over three years and have worked with patients and clients in healthcare settings for over 17 years.

My graduate work includes counseling homeless youth at NeighborCare 45th Street Clinic and local Homeless Youth Drop-in Centers in Seattle.  I later worked in the Primary Care Clinic as a Behavioral Health Therapist at 45th Street Clinic.  I have worked with various populations, including people with severe mental illness, marginalized groups, people living with illness such as Hepatitis C, HIV/AIDS and chronic disease.  Contributing to my therapeutic skill are also my experience and training in crisis services and psychiatric acuity working in the Emergency Department at Overlake Hospital Medical Center.

Seeking therapy can be a wonderful start for change, if needed, or a source of compassionate support.  I feel that one of the deepest needs for people is wholeness, to be fully accepted as they are and to experience relationships as a healing force toward growth and self-understanding. In my practice, clients are met with the deepest respect, the knowledge of underlying needs and patterns to be explored, and a passionate curiosity about their individual paths to a meaningful life.
