David Flack, MA, LMHC, CDP
I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) and Chemical Dependency Professional (CDP), with additional credentials as a Child Mental Health Specialist and Sexual Minority Mental Health Specialist. I have a Master of Arts degree in Counseling Psychology from City University of Seattle and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Applied Psychology from The Evergreen State University.
For twenty years, I’ve worked with individuals and families impacted by substance use, trauma, and mental health challenges – as a therapist, drug/alcohol counselor, and case manager. Before entering private practice in 2017. I spent fifteen years working in community mental health agencies, primarily as an adolescent co-occurring disorders therapist. This means I provided counseling to teens and young adults with both substance use and mental health challenges. I’ve also provided substance abuse counseling to teens, conducted trauma therapy with pre-teen boys, worked as a case manager in a residential program for sexually aggressive youth, and provided mental health services at a university counseling center.
I believe change is a journey. My goal is to help you, your youth, or your family on your journey. We’ll do that by making choices about what to change, identifying behaviors to leave behind, and developing skills to that will be useful as you move forward.
My thinking is influenced by existential psychotherapy and attachment theory, but I tend to be fairly pragmatic in sessions, utilizing what seems most useful right now. Most often, that’s a mix of motivational interviewing, narrative therapy, experiential approaches, and cognitive-behavioral traditions. I also have significant training and experience using dialectical behavioral therapy, an evidence-based approach I find especially useful when working with self-harming, highly anxious, or oppositional teens.
In addition to my clinical work, I’m an experienced trainer and workshop facilitator. I regularly provide professional development and continuing education programs both regionally and nationally. I’ve also presented for non-profit agencies, county sponsored events, and over 100 times at international, national, and regional conferences -- including the American Counseling Association and Association of Experiential Education.
